England by Dale Nolan
The ancient kingdom of England is a land of wild, purple-hazed moorlands, rolling green hills, striking coastland, historic cities and dreamy church spires set within the British Islands. Despite its relatively small size, England’s impact on the world is incredible and its glittering attractions make it a popular destination steeped in myth and legend. From the captivating beauty of the Lake District and Yorkshire Moors to the works of Dickens and Shakespeare, England is a richly diverse nation packed with castles, palaces and ruins and well placed for exploration and relaxation.
Neolithic and Celtic settlers were some of the first peoples to reach England and their remains and ruins litter the country. England then saw a wave of Anglo-Saxons who portioned the land into counties but their trading success alerted the Romans who invaded England and established a series of settlements and fortifications. Following the withdrawal of the Romans in the Fifth century, the Anglo-Saxons reasserted control and established kingdoms and defences to protect the land from frequent Viking attacks. In 1066, the Normans invaded and in the next several centuries Scotland and Wales felt the brunt of English aggression culminating in the Act of Union and the creation of Great Britain. During the Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries, Britain’s Industrial Revolution and maritime prowess led to the creation of the sprawling and successful British Empire. Following Britain’s involvement in both World Wars, England has undergone a transition period and is today a multicultural and vibrant nation with plenty to offer visitors to its shores.
Standing at the base of England is the nation’s economic heartbeat of London and this huge, bustling metropolis is one of the world’s great cities. The majority of visitors to England arrive through the English capital and this fascinating sprawling city boasts some of the most striking and world-renowned visitor attractions in the nation. Some of the best sites to explore across the capital include the iconic Big Ben and Parliament buildings, elegant Buckingham Palace, the truly stunning St. Paul’s Cathedral and the ultra-modern London Eye, which offers some spectacular views of the capital. London remains a hugely popular visitor destination and is also home to a stellar list of museums and galleries, several large parks, colourful markets and carnivals and some of the best bars and restaurants to be found anywhere in the world.
Moving out from London, England is blessed with many more impressive cities and these places offer some fantastic opportunities to soak up England’s captivating history and culture. For those wanting to immerse themselves in the nation’s glorious history and explore beautiful medieval alleys, Victorian splendour and Edwardian architecture, then look no further than the exquisite cities of Bath, York and Cambridge. Similarly, for those wanting to enjoy superb music, football and nightlife, then the northern cities of Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds are an exciting and welcome alternative destination.
England however is not just the sum of its many cities, some of the most enchanting and enduring images of the country are of sleepy villages complete with stone churches, pubs and squares and these can be found scattered across the nation such as Derbyshire’s Castleton or Wells in the south-west.
As a nation, England is absolutely awash with fabulous sights and some of the other worthy places to visit include exquisite Chatsworth House, mighty Hadrian’s Wall, lovely Blenheim Palace and the mysterious Stonehenge - one of the most important prehistoric sites on the face of the planet.
Away from the nation’s busy settlements, England also boasts some truly outstanding countryside and national parks and these have inspired great writers such as the Bronte Sisters, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, J.R.R. Tolkien and William Shakespeare.
The most awe-inspiring countryside can be found amongst the brooding moors of Yorkshire and Devon, across the limestone peaks and creaking caverns of the Peak District and along the striking cliffs and bird-swooping crags of the Northumberland and Cornish coastlands. These breathtaking regions provide a soothing change of pace as well as offering outstanding opportunities for surfing, white water rafting, rambling, caving, hiking and mountain biking. Furthermore, as visitors soak up England’s atmospheric countryside it isn’t hard to imagine the fables of legends such as King Arthur or Robin Hood or hear the lingering echoes of bloody, long gone battles.
No exploration of England’s striking natural beauty however would be complete without visiting the nation’s very own Lake District. Set at the centre of the county of Cumbria, the Lakes are perhaps the most visually stunning of all the England’s national parks and attract visitors from around the world. The charming region includes refreshing lakes, striking valleys and weathered mountains looking out majestically towards the Irish Sea. One of the most appealing aspects of walking or sailing in the Lakes is the swiftness in which the weather and colours change and these offer some delightful panoramas of this unforgettable corner of England.
All in all, England is a visitor’s dream encompassing a diverse collection of attractions and styles of holiday. From the warm climes of the English Riviera and the brooding landscape of the north to vibrant cities, pretty villages and ancient monuments, England has it all in rich abundance making it one of the world’s greatest visitor destinations to stay in and explore.
